Supporting Mobile Collaborative Activities through Scaffolded Flexible Grouping
نویسندگان
چکیده
Within the field of Mobile Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (mCSCL), we are interested in exploring the space of collaborative activities that enable students to practice communication, negotiation and decision-making skills. Collaboration is via learning activities that circumvent the constraints of fixed seating or locations of students. This paper presents one such collaborative learning activity that involves young students forming groups to achieve a specific goal (get the fractions on their handhelds to sum to one). Collaborative scaffolding is provided by the designed mobile collaborative application as well as by the students’ social relationships and the teacher’s facilitation. We report on our initial trials which show that the socio-technical design of the activity helps students in identifying their own strategies and stimulates collaboration. Beyond this specific application, we propose a generic model for mobile computer supported collaborative activities that can support a range of other tasks in learning languages, science or other disciplines.

Flexible Data Storage for Mobile Collaborative Applications
In this paper we describe a flexible object storage system aimed at supporting collaborative applications in largescale environments that include mobile computers. We present an integrated solution to two major problems that arise in such environments: data availability and concurrency control. The first is tackled by the flexible combination of weakly consistent server replication and client c...

In this technical report we describe a flexible storage system aimed at supporting collaborative applications in large-scale environments that include mobile computers. In such settings two major problems arise: data availability and concurrent updates merging. The first is tackled by the combination of weakly consistent server replication and client caching. The second, through an open object ...

متن کاملHow Flexible Grouping Affects the Collaborative Patterns in a Mobile-Assisted Chinese Character Learning Game
This paper reports the impacts of spontaneous student grouping to develop young students’ orthographic awareness in the process of learning Chinese characters. A mobile-assisted Chinese character forming game is used to assign each student a Chinese character component on their smartphones through a wireless network. Fifteen Singaporean students, all 3rd graders (10-year-old) studying Chinese a...
متن کاملMC-Supporter: Flexible Mobile Computing Supporting Learning though Social Interactions
Nowadays, we are experiencing a rapid development in mobile computing because of the sinking prices of the mobile devices and the availability of wireless networks that can connect them. The ability of many of these devices to set up ad-hoc networks by proximity allows face-to-face interaction combined with mobility. However, mobile devices are much weaker in computing power compared with deskt...
